London Southend Airport and Environs Joint Area Action Plan Preferred Options

Representation ID: 4540

Respondent: Richard Burstow

Representation Summary:

I believe that we should support this proposal as it appears to represent a balanced plan for the development of the airport and surrounding area. Without our support for change the airport will die and this plan provides a way forward with increased opportunities for local employment.

Representation Summary:

I am certain that the proposed development will have a detrimental affect on all local residents due to:
* huge increase in noise and air pollution
* ever more traffic/congestion
* transport/road infrastructure already unable to cope with current volume 9re A127, Rayleigh/Eastwood Rd - all roads to/from Southend
* further loss of Green Belt land
* Disturbance from freight planes 24/7
* Potential Safety Issues

In addition, outline plan is totally unrealistic and misleading especially with regard to the promise of a large increase in local employment.

New Jobs, if any, are likely to be offered to non locals - there is no Section 106

The local road and rail network will be clogged.
Noise will be unbearable across a wide area including more night flights than you think possible.
Rising energy costs will limit air travel leaving a white elephant airport.

Full text:

The increase in land and air traffic, noise pollution and dubious promise of increased employment and revenue, raise grave doubts as to the depth of true investigation which may have taken place. This "opportunity to comment" is a fig leaf for counsellors who wish to be associated with a "grand" development and associated phot opportunities. Increasing fuel costs are highly likely to give rise to strenuous discouragement of unnecessary travel in the near future and placed as we are in an awkward corner of the country are likely to be sacrificed early on. Vote no, for what it's worth.

A chaotic divergence in policy between both sponsoring councils as to general public inclusion in the consultation, a preferred strategy that was never chosen by the majority vote (an extensive public consultation!), a 3.5 month black hole in producing a first phase result and an unseemly rush to somehow stick to the original timetable for submission to the Secretary of State.The pre-submission consultation ends in July & the submission to the Secretary is also in July.What about the analysis?Could the result be pre-determined? Make your own mind up. Where is the Environmental Impact Assessment in all of this?

I think this is an excellent opportunity to make the most of an underused facility which would benefit the whole of South Essex. I for one would be delighted not to have to travel to Stansted or drive 450 miles to visit family in Scotland if there was a suitable flight leaving locally.
I assume that when the consultation period is over, bulk objection emails (and supports) from individuals (particularly SAEN) will be counted as being one objection from one individual rather than multiple objections. Confirmation please?

I cannot afford to move because of this.
Please have consideration for local residents lives.Maybe I made a bad choice to live near the airport but please dont make my children suffer.
They deserve the right to a good quality of life.

I do not feel that the residents of Southend and Rochford have been fully briefed and consulted fairly on this important matter which impacts us all. This consultation is not INDEPENDENT and could be interpreted and biased towards the airport or council's views.

You assume:
a) residents are aware of the exact proposals in order to make their view known - I expect the majority are not;
b) residents fully understand the IMPACT of the proposals;
c) residents will comment on the website.

How will you interpret our views? There should be a representative independent survey conducted about such an important matter.

I strongly object to the proposed development of the airport, especially the runway expansion encrouching onto Eastwood bury lane, the increase in road traffic produced as a knock on effect of this expansion the A127 is busy enough as it is now and cannot sustain the present levels of traffic into the town and surrounding areas. I believe that Boris Johnson's proposal of an airport in the estuary of the thames is the only way forward and therefore I strongly object to the present expansions plans.

It became clear with comments made at the 24 March meeting that many people had not received documentation asking for their views. It was suggested that the consultation period should be extended. Neither have I or my staff (although we live in Hullbridge and Hockley). Perhaps the consultation period should be extended?

Expansion bad because of pollution, noise, increased traffic on roads, ruining lives of local people. Business interests being put above local people.

Full text:

We are objecting to the proposals to greatly expand Southend airport. Whilst there may be arguments for such an expansion leading to benefits through increased trade in the local area, these are far outweighed by the disturbance that will be experienced by local residents.
The expansion will lead to an increased number of flights taking off and landing over the currently peaceful Leigh-on-Sea area, an oasis of calm in South Essex. The resulting noise and pollution will make our lives extremely unpleasant. The traffic on our roads which are already extremely busy will become heavier, with further air pollution.
There is already a large airport in Stansted. We do not want another large airport in Essex.
If Southend Council press ahead with this proposal, putting business interests above local people, they can experience a barrage of protests and unpopularity will see the current Council leaders removed from office.
Please see sense and stop this expansion.

I object to increasing the length of the runway and I object to expansion of Southend Airport.

This expansion is inappropriate in such a densely populated residential area. The increased flight numbers will lead to increased noise levels, reduced air quality, and an increase in congestion on already-congested local roads. All this will have a negative impact on the lives, health and well-being of local residents.

Full text:

I object to increasing the length of the runway and I object to expansion of Southend Airport.

This expansion is inappropriate in such a densely populated residential area. The increased flight numbers will lead to increased noise levels, reduced air quality, and an increase in congestion on already-congested local roads. All this will have a negative impact on the lives, health and well-being of local residents.

So-called "quieter and more fuel-efficient" aircraft still generate significant noise and significant pollution. As flight numbers would increase due to expansion of the airport and the size of incoming aircraft would be larger due to lengthening of runway, so the total environment impact worsens.

The increased noise levels and reduced air quality will arise not just from the aircraft alone. It will arise also from the numerous freight lorries travelling to and from the airport to serve the extra incoming aircraft. Road links to Rochford and Southend are already congested. One can only be saddened at the prospect of yet more roads being built and those new roads themselves becoming congested, simply because of this elephant of an airport expansion.

Maybe this proposed airport expansion is a ploy to drive the local population away. Who would choose to live in such a noisy, polluted, congested area with large aircraft and lorries continually passing over and passing by? People needs job but I can't see that this proposed airport expansion would generate nearly enough jobs to compensate for the damage done to the local population.
