JUSTIFICATION

No. 6 Southend Road, Hockley was designed by a noted local architect and well known Southend figure, Mr David Henry Burles (1866-1942), of the firm Burles & Harris for his son in law and daughter, Mr Stanley and Mrs Violet Yeadell. The house was built in 1925.

He was a founder member of Essex, Cambridge and Hertfordshire Society of Architects and the Southend Historical Society. He made many drawings of churches and other historical buildings and gave lectures on the subject. Some of these were acquired by Southend Borough Council and have been displayed at Prittlewell Priory and elsewhere.

Several buildings he designed are on Southend Borough Local List of heritage buildings (details obtained from Conservation department):

He also designed the former R A Jones, jewellers, High Street, Southend which is considered to have frontage townscape merit.

The building and interior are unchanged apart from added central heating. It is a detached 4 bedroom, 2 reception house. The exterior is rendered, with clay tiled, hipped roof. There are two stolid, tall chimneys either side of the house. The guttering is cast iron. There are wide Crittall casement windows all round.

There is pitch pine parquet flooring throughout the reception rooms and front hall. Doors, cupboards and staircase throughout the house are decorated pitch pine timber.
