* Bullwood Hall

Members note that the following sites recommended by RDC showing them as being in Hockley but in fact should be included in the Ashingdon Parish Councils List.

* The Old Forge, Greensward Lane

Members also noted that The White Hart is in Hockley Parish and not as shown by RDC as being in Hawkwell Parish.

Apply for inclusion of 6 Southend Road, Hockley in 2011 Local List of Assets.

A small planning consent does not involve the house.

No. 6 Southend Road, Hockley, SS5 4QQ

JUSTIFICATION

No. 6 Southend Road, Hockley was designed by a noted local architect and well known Southend figure, Mr David Henry Burles (1866-1942), of the firm Burles & Harris for his son in law and daughter, Mr Stanley and Mrs Violet Yeadell. The house was built in 1925.

He was a founder member of Essex, Cambridge and Hertfordshire Society of Architects and the Southend Historical Society. He made many drawings of churches and other historical buildings and gave lectures on the subject. Some of these were acquired by Southend Borough Council and have been displayed at Prittlewell Priory and elsewhere.

Several buildings he designed are on Southend Borough Local List of heritage buildings (details obtained from Conservation department):

Crowstone United Reformed Church, Kings Road, Westcliff
The Bretheren Church, Coleman Street, Southend
Castle Public House, 92 Eastern Esplanade, Southend
Cornucopia Public House, 39 Marine Parade, Southend
Southend Adult Education Centre, Ambleside Drive, Southend
23-29 Clarence Street, Southend
He also designed the former R A Jones, jewellers, High Street, Southend which is considered to have frontage townscape merit.

KEY FEATURES

No. 6 stands at the hilltop entrance to Hockley accompanied by other character houses built between 19 and early 20th century. The building and interior are unchanged apart from added central heating. It is a detached 4 bedroom, 2 reception house. The exterior is rendered, with clay tiled, hipped roof. There are two stolid, tall chimneys either side of the house. The guttering is cast iron. There are wide Crittall casement windows all round.

The main reception room extends from front to rear on the south side, with windows all round. It has a brick fireplace and tiled hearth, with inset cupboards either side. The smaller reception room on the north side also has brick fireplace with tiled hearth with inset cupboards.

There is pitch pine parquet flooring throughout the reception rooms and front hall. Doors, cupboards and staircase throughout the house are decorated pitch pine timber.

The large kitchen has pitch pine integral Welsh dresser. There is a Butler sink and the floor red tiled stone. There is a larder with timber shelves off the kitchen.

The bedrooms have cast iron fire places.

Much original furniture remains.

The garden contains a number of Victorian fruit trees and other shrubs, including an umbrella ash tree to rear, purnus and silver birch in front of the house and the north border is lined with holly trees.
