Q5.1 Which is your preferred Scenario for the future of the Southend Airport area?
Representation ID: 2427
Received: 07/08/2008
Respondent: Inflite Southend Ltd
Scenario 3
This opportunity cannot be missed, standing still is not an option. Economic growth of the area is at stake. The airport is the catalyst, without development of this site Southend will remain a seaside resort and a seaside resort only - doesn't give many employment opportunities. Its no good giving good further education to school leavers if they up sticks and move out of the area!

Imrpove the infrastructure to encourage airlines, operators, maintenance organisations to locate at the airport/or use the facilities. So, improve the terminal, bring in a rail link, build a hotel, lengthen the runway, create business parks.

Help shape the development, encourage support from business leaders, government, and market the great potential of growing the airport. Lobby parliment to invest heavily in improving road links. The A127 cannot cope today - tomorrow something must be done.

Scenario 3
The environmental consequences of expanding must be thoroughly investigated, noise pollution, fuel pollution and their effect on nature. Still, I believe that by expanding Southend this will hopefully alleviate the already overstretched Gatwick, Stansted and Heathrow particularly on short haul European routes.

Expansion is the obvious answer, with this more people will visit and bring an much needed boost to the local economy. Certainly for short haul flights Southend should be a major consideration for not only tourist flights, but business too as central London can be reached by train in under 50 minutes.

Q4.10 What do you consider to be the transport priorities for the JAAP?
Representation ID: 2432
Received: 07/08/2008
Respondent: Inflite Southend Ltd
To cope with the additional "human traffic" the infrastructure to support these plans must have solid foundations whilst rail access to and from the area is pretty reliable, road access is an entirely different story, in general, public transport needs to be more user friendly from and to the airport.

Scenario 3
Development of the airport and the lengthening of the runway has been proposed many times before. Without a positive decision one way or the other, little enthusiasm can be expected from prospective investors and developers to bring businesses to the current limited facility and its surrounding area.

The only way forward to expand aviation business development is to lengthen the runway. Aircraft operators will not be inclined to schedule flights from a restricted airport and the rail link is unlikely to proceed without a demand to justify it. Without the runway extension, development is likely to be limited to industrial units around the airport perimeter.

Secure interest and commitment from prospective aircraft operators who would potentially fly services from Southend airport using the lengthend runway. If this can be achieved, businesses will grow naturally to support airport services such as freight handling and forwarding, aircraft maintenance, ground handling and travel services.

The gain from Scenario 3 out weighs any losses for the Southend Area. As the area's population continues to rise due to new housing, the extra employment is a must.
