Travel and Tourism is a major player in the provison of job opportunities. The Southend area has lost so many office jobs over recent years, just look at all those firms that have gone from Victoria Avenue.

You will only get jobs if they are there. Let me give you a hint - they are not.
What is the point of supplying 109,000 sq m of floorspace if it remains empty - much like all the offices and factories currently becoming empty across the region.
Where do the 6200 jobs come from? Its certainly not from all those businesses that the banks are(n't) supporting at the moment.

We agree that the pursuit of increased employment should be a major part of this action Plan, and so should the drive for increasing investment in the area. However, the aquisition of development land must be done sensitively with softer options also being considered. |The balance is crucial in order to also preserve the residential and recreational character of our Seaside Town.

I support the development of the aviation way business park and the business park on cherry orchard way. I do not support development at Nestuda Way as I believe the road system cannot cope with the local plus commuter/delivery traffic.

Southend has empty office space and unlike Rochford is a town suitable to such development. It is unacceptable to use green belt land. Saxon Business Park doesn't need to be 'enhanced' by the removal of green belt land. It can be developed without the need to do this. There was a business on Towerfield Industrial Estate which provided extensive service to airlines at most of the country's airports-it didn't have to be near the airports to do this

To maximise employment potential, and give the area a much needed amenity, the Airport should be closed and re-developed as a regional shopping centre. This could create thousands of jobs suitable to the South Essex skils base as well as reversing the flow of shoppers to Lakeside and Bluewater. There is a lot of potential retail spending power in Southend which goes elsewhere because of the poor quality of the High Street.
Having said that, of course I have no onjection to an industial park too. But let's not pretend it will be any more high tech than, say, Basildon.

I strongly object to the airport expansion plans in terms of impact of noise levels, incrrased aircraft flying too near to houses, pollution, impact on traffic in the Southend area and impact on house prices.

I do not think that the results from the current consultation will be fully representative of the southend and rochford populations and would like to see a reprentative independent survey conducted about such an important matter that will impact all of our lives.

We support the plan to increase local employment but doubt the strategy of linking this to the airport. Airlines are cutting back on airport staff with online check-in and more automated baggage handling (or a "no baggage" approach), so direct employment opportunities will surely be much lower than might be anticipated. Make Southend a good area to live and companies will relocate. But would you want to to work or live next to a runway? Perhaps you should relocate the council offices to this area....

Object Issue 2: Developing business parks is a separate issue to direct airport employment. The jobs at Saxon Business Park will not be 'new' jobs - merely businesses relocated from Eldon Way Industrial Estate. Whether other jobs will be filled by local people is unclear. I am concerned about the loss of flying clubs for the community and the Air Show which would both amount to job losses and the erosion of community activities.

This is not a 'Masterplan'. It has no basis in facts as proper, independent assessment has been undertaken or results presented. How many projected jobs will be created? in what areas? How many posts will be filled by members of the local community? Which companies will fill the industrial estate when offices lie empty? Are you suggesting that these will be companies with international trading capabilities because they will be close to an airport? What are you suggesting? How much will all this expansion cost and what else could be done with the money to improve the area?

While modest employment growth at the site would be welcome, the growth proposed is both irresponsible and unachievable. Again, see Brendon Sewill's report "Airport jobs: false hopes, cruel hoax". The destruction of a number of areas of greenbelt in order to expand the industrial site is completely unnecessary given the abundance of available sites in Southend, such as the recently-demolished Prittlebrook Industrial Estate and vacant buildings elsewhere in the borough.
However, if the airport and councils believe job creation potential to be this great, the Section 106 agreement should require 5000 jobs to be created at the site within five years.

We don't have the transport infrastructure necessary to support the new businesses or the airport. Perhaps it will be argued that improving the transport infrastructure will create yet more jobs but with what impact on the environment? More needs to be done to protect our "green and pleasant land". Please let's consider future generations and not simply think of ourselves and the here and now.

Employment in the JAAP area would still be viable without extending the runway. It will be difficult to attract businesses to a noisy, polluted environment. Offices that rely on telepone communciation will find it impossible to carry out conversations, Victoria Avenue,in Southend and Plaza cannot attract, so I don't see what the attraction will be to work on an airport site.

To rely on airport expansion to increase employment opportunities is flawed. Many jobs will come from the re-location of already local businesses. There is no guarantee new jobs will be for local people. Aviation businesses are cutting staff due to increasing overheads and reduced profit margins. To operate within tightening profit margins, minimal staff are employed. Online check-in and the automation of facilities will continue to reduce future employment opportunities. Noise and traffic congestion caused by airport expansion will reduce Southend's appeal as a day tripper destination, reducing the income of many businesses.

There are and have been for many years a great number of empty commercial and industrial premises within the Southend Borough. If there is such demand then these blights on the area should not exist, opening up new areas at the airport may significantly worsen the situation in locations such as 'Progress Road'.
