It would be nice to see some cycle tracks in the Southend area that are continuous, and not intermittent, as all of them are at present.EG. Whitehouse Road at junction with Nestuda Way. 15 yards main road to cross. For role model see Basildon.

Cycling routes to the west of the airport also need to be considered. At present it is impossible to cycle safely from the borough boundary in Eastwood (either A127 or via Rayleigh Road). There is no continuous path, and if you use the A127 between Kents Elms and where the cycle path restarts (half way towards Tescos) then you take you life in your hands.

New cycle and walking routes are welcome. Existing footpaths and rights of way must not be lost nor compromised by development over or around them.

Full text:

While the establishment of walking and cycling routes is to be welcomed, there are existing footpaths/ rights of ways across and to the west of the existing airport, linking Rochford via the Rochford Hundred golf course to St Lawrence's church and to Cherry Orchard Way. It is far from clear whether these rights of way will be retained. They currently provide quality, popular walking routes, and should not be lost.

It seems as if the path to Cherry Orchard Way may be absorbed by the business park development proposed for the area which currently includes the brickwork cottages. While the right of way may maintained, the surroundings will not be open space. Quality will be lost.

Harden up this policy so that it reads "required to provide walking and cycling facilities". Otherwise what does make a contribution mean? If the contributions are not enough do we the tax payers cough up or does it mean that the facilities don't materialise but were simply some policy maker's "vision"?

"make a contribution towards the improvement"? Sounds like another half-hearted and ill-thought out attempt to stop opposition. Seriously, I wonder who will be out walking and cycling under this lovely flight path? Not the thousands of airport passengers on those "high quality public transport links", nor those hundreds of people working in those "eco-friendly business start-up units". It must be us: the lucky local residents. Mmm,airplane fuel, the constant roar of planes overhead, sounds wonderful.

STRONGLY OBJECT TO ALL EXPANSION. Do minimum or preferably no expansion. The increase in aircraft noise for us residents will become intolerable, emissions will increase. The road system cannot cope with current traffic levels. If 2m passenger movements are reached this will require about 4000 extra car journeys per day!!! Imagine the road upgrading work for the next few years that would be required. This area has a high percentage of elderly people who hardly fly. Who will the expansion benefit, people flying from outside the region and the business people and major shareholders who will make millions of pounds.

This policy should include a reference to the need to provide a route to replace the existing footpath within the airport boundary which crosses the taxiway in the Northern MRO Zone, causing a security and safety risk. Opportunities exist to provide new footpaths along the east-west section of Aviation Way as part of an access improvements package for people working in the new employment areas, and for new leisure footpaths from the Cherry Orchard County Park to the relocated rugby club and the public open space to the north of the new employment areas.

If the council's current provision for cycle routes is anything to go by this is a non-starter

I strongly object to the plans to extend southend airport. I do not believe the area needs another airport, particularly one that is in an urban area and will effect many people's lives in leigh on sea, both financially through the fall in house prices and environmentally. Plans to have night flights are totally unacceptable and will be detremental people's lives including children and will effect their education. I for one will be discussing this with my Local MP to stop this ridiculous proposal. A far better plan would have been to move the Hospital to the Airport site!!!

This will have a negative on:-

1. Environment (noise and pollution)
2. Wildlife and greenbelt
3. Surrounding residential properties
4. Public Services (Health and Education)
5. Infrastructure (congestion)

I dont believe the sweetner on job creation given the current climate so dont be fooled by this one. I can't see many companies wanting to invest in this proposal.

Representation Summary:

Firstly, who would want to walk or cycle for leisure under the flight path of such a busy , noisy, polluting airport as is envisaged if the plans go through?

Secondly, people en route to work generally have little time to take such slow modes of transport, and little inclination to do so in poor weather.
There are also hundreds of people who live too far from work to walk there within an hour, and hundreds more who can't cycle for health or safety reasons.
