About time too. I have lived within 2 miles of this Airport for all of my 51 years and, for the last 30 of them, have long wished for the airport to be developed in exactly this way. Increased employment and prosperity for locals, without having to commute to London, and a doorstep link to the rest of Europe and beyond. You have my whole hearted support ..... now lets get on with it.

I support this as it will create unique careers for the people of Southend & Rochford, meaning that they will have a vital role in the running of a bust airport. I also think that the 50/50 method of the sharing of jobs is simple and could work quite well.

Although i am not against progress I am rather worried about the air quality, traffic using Hockley as a cut through and general traffic congestion. I work from home and am also worried about the noise side of things as I do't have air conditioning or soundproofing etc. Are we going to see the infrastructure put in place first or are we going to see the usual changes, well we can't afford to do it as we have seen about the A127 before.

There is absolutely no evidence that 7380 jobs can be created in the current economic climate or that they will all go to local people. This is a fictional figure that is being used to justify airport expansion that will simply harm the environment. There is alreay more than enough airport capacity in the South East.

Will ruin the area. Jobs for locals - I don't
think so. With the 3000 new houses and 15 traveller sites - what will the area be like??
We have Stanstead - thats enough
I moved to Hawkwell 8 years ago to escape the
growing noise and trouble in Hornchurch. I have
enjoyed living in Hawkwell for all the reasons I moved here.
Now we are going to have a major airport on our
doorstep. No amount of excuses will alter the
fact that it will ruin this lovely area.
The influx of people to an area already having
over 3000 new houses being build in the next 2
years will lead to over crowding of our road,
schools, doctors, dentists etc.,
Not to mention the 15 "traveller" sites we also
have to find.
Yes I know the expansion will bring in jobs, but
who for? Locals - I don't think so!!!

This is an ideal opportunity for the growing university (in conjunction with current and future companies, with specialist trades at the airport and proposed industrial area) to provide valuable training and employment opportunities within the Rochford/Southend area.
The airport development would encourage much needed investment and generate much needed income to the area as a whole.

Why is there no mention of St Laurence Church either here or anywhere else in the preferred options document. This church dates from 1100 and is part of our local heritage. It is not possible to make an informed comment on the preferred options without this issue being addressed. Whilst I welcome the creation of local jobs, I do not support this to the detriment of our heritage.

Quality of life degrades near airports as flight numbers increase. Fact. Consult with Stanstead, Gatwick or Heathrow residents. SE Essex has high employment levels compared to national average. More noise and pollution for tens of thousands to benefit few hundred people. Two big airports for one county? What is to stop Southend Airport becoming freight/training by the back door once permission has been granted? 2 million people p.a. are not going to drive past Stanstead/M11 at 70mph to Southend up A127 at 40mph? Consult with Ramsgate residents on their airport disaster.

There are already significant areas of unused "employment Space" which are empty. They are already in the borough, within easy travel distance to the airport, so why do we need to build any more. These will definately not be NEW jobs anyway. Only relocated ones from elsewhere.

The creation of jobs is dependent on attracting business to the development. There are already a number of empty and disused offices and industrial premises in both Southend and Rochford(and particularly in this area of town) There is no evidence that this new development is required especially in the current financial situation or that it will create jobs.Would it not be better to redevelop existing reduntant commercial buildings?

The airport should be called Southernd Airport without the misleading reference to London. We are not a credible alternative to any of the London Airports and should not try and deceive potential users that we are. We should be proud to be what we are i.e. Southend Airport.
Why no mention of the impact the plan will have on Eastwoodbury Church?
The plan seems to be a bit top heavy on "business parks" and a bit light on extending the runway to get bigger planes in and encouraging bigger operators who fly more destinations and bring employment in as a side benefit.

On Employment that the plan would generate. The new development at the business parks that has taken place so far(ie:-Toomeys & Voltswaqon car showrooms and the petrol station), have not generated any new jobs because they have shut some existing showrooms leaving these premises empty and derelict, transferring existing staff to the new sites. There is also the fact that The Stobart Group have brought in, IN HOUSE CONTRACTORS to develop the Railway Station, Hotel and Control Tower. WHERE ARE ALL THE NEW JOBS?

Airport developments nationwide are littered with these extravagent employment claims which are never realised. Tightening environmental legislation, diminishing fossil fuel reserves and local competition cast great doubt on the sustainability of this industry as an escalating employer in Southend. We should be developing a skill base and manufacturing capacity in such as solar technology and hydrogen related automotive propulsion

Having read the document we would wish to offer our general support to the principles contained within the Joint Area Action Plan, and we would make the following points:
The airport is a major employment location and its expansion will make significant contributions towards the sub-regional employment opportunities (circa 7,380 new jobs). These new jobs will be in both aviation related businesses (including maintenance, repair and overhaul) and general businesses in the adjoining and expanded business parks, which will provide modern, and sustainable office accommodation.
Dear Mr Hollingworth
On behalf of our client (Aber Ltd) we have reviewed the London Southend Airport & Environs Joint Area Action Plan - Preferred Options (February 2009), which has been prepared jointly between Rochford District Council and Southend-on-Sea Borough Council.
Having read the document we would wish to offer our general support to the principles contained within the Joint Area Action Plan, and we would make the following points:
The strategic and local importance of the airport to this area is recognised and in order to reach its potential as a local regional airport, it is essential that airport is able to expand. Of particular importance is the need to extend the runway (as this would increase its attractiveness to fixed based operators), provide new passenger facilities, a park and ride facility and new train station to serve the airport; only with these essential improvements will the airport be able to transport the anticipated capacity of 2 million passengers per annum.
In order to accommodate the expansion to the airport and the associated business park development, it is necessary to allocate and protect key areas of land in the proximity of the airport for the purposed uses and key infrastructure. It is accepted that this will necessitate the need to revise the Green Belt boundary to accommodate the growth of the airport.
Kind regards

I object to the increase air traffic noise and pollution, the increase road traffic on the grounds of congestion noise and pollution, where are the additional employees going to live? There is little or no room for additional housing in the area without releasing more greenbelt, which contrary to current planning policies. There are many empty industrial units currently available, why spend millions of £'s to provide more.

The number of new jobs (which I dispute) does not compensate for the increase in noise & air pollution and degradation of life/living in Leigh and surronding area that will be affected. There are many empty units in the location already, there is no point in increasing the number

Where are the proposed new employees going to live, are jobs going to be given to residents of Rochford and Southend District and if so how will it be governed. If jobs are not restricted to residents of the Districts what will the effect be on traffic and housing in the Districts, will this have some impact on the Core Strategy and will it be taken into account when deciding sites and what infrastructure is needed.

At last, an excellent opportunity for this town to expand and to create jobs. It is long overdue and must be beneficial to the vast majority of Southend residents. Many people I know are excited about the prospect of being able to use a "local airport" again. I live close to the flight path now but any noise soon becomes "distant". You hear it but no more than passing traffic so I don't see it as a problem.

The aim of creating over 7000 new jobs, most unlikely. Recent history of other small provincial airports that expand, generally fail to deliver anything like even a third of the promised new jobs. In general, most of these possible new jobs directly from the airport, will be either high skill/experience based, or the low paid service industry jobs. The former will, almost certainly, be filled with people from other airports, the latter tend to be shift work & low pay. Not the sort of jobs that can support local families.
