Plans based on significant expansion of the Airport in terms of flights seem unsustainable given the need to cut greenhouse gas emissions and the escalation of fuel prices as Peak Oil impacts on the industry.

STRONGLY OBJECT TO ALL EXPANSION. Do minimum or preferably no expansion. The increase in aircraft noise for us residents will become intolerable, emissions will increase. The road system cannot cope with current traffic levels. If 2m passenger movements are reached this will require about 4000 extra car journeys per day!!! Imagine the road upgrading work for the next few years that would be required. This area has a high percentage of elderly people who hardly fly. Who will the expansion benefit, people flying from outside the region and the business people and major shareholders who will make millions of pounds.

Since I believe the airport is currently for sale, I wonder if it is wise to make these plans before the sale has taken place. I believe that these plans constitute an uncertainty that can only prolong the sale process and general confusion. I think it would make far more sense to stop proposing different plans that will impact on the market value of the business. Of course once it is sold, we will then know who the new owners will be and what they propose.

I have looked at these plans and I think a few questions are raised.

1- Since I believe the airport is currently for sale, I wonder if it is wise to make these plans before the sale has taken place. I believe that these plans constitute an uncertainty that can only prolong the sale process and general confusion. I think it would make far more sense to stop proposing different plans that will impact on the market value of the business. Of course once it is sold, we will then know who the new owners will be and what they propose.

2- I notice at the moment that 1500 people are employed within the environs of the airport, but that most of them are not directly employed by the workings (flights/maintenance) of the airport. It seems to me that if the runways were given over to industrial use, there could be a lot of development and employment without the environmental "disbenifits" of an industry that is currently based on burning fossil fuels and creating CO2.

3- This brings me to my last point, which is to ask whether further development centred around an industry that is based on a limited resource (fossil fuels) is strategically sound for the future of this area.

Obviously I would be opposed to any plans which allow re-allocation of greenbelt land for a strategy with such strong environmental disbenefits!

I believe that as it stands, the airport makes a profit for its owners and as they are wishing to sell, there is no pressing reason to move ahead with any of these proposals. I am unaware of local employment problems and therefore am not at all sure what is in it for Rochford, nor why there is any need for haste.

The airport seems to have arrived at its present situation due to a complete lack of strategic foresight. Let's not continue in the same vein eh?

Regards Craig Carter

I agree with most comments, but, living on the
flight path, I do have concerns for the house for which constant planes coming and going could damage the property. What compensation will we get should damage occur. Plus there is the noise issue, at present a particular plane takes off at midnight or just after and then returns as early as six am. There has to be a cut off time for planes to land in the evening and taking off in the morning. Who will be responsible for damage caused to property?

I consider the further development of the airport will have a detrimental effect on both noise, pollution and volume of traffic. I live in Rayleigh and we experience aircraft noise from takeoff and landing at the present time and do not wish to see this increased. Both Gatwick and Stansted are easily accessible and I see no need to be able to fly from Southend - there is nothing to be gained.

I would strongly object to any increase in size or activity at Southend Airport on environmental grounds. I think we should be taking fewer flights not more. I think government at both local and national level should take some leadership on this issue and stop further development of airports. Keep our green belt.
