Representation Summary:

Your plan is not aspirational enough and not attractive to businesses that require a higher calibre of staff.
No provision for businesses to grow from cradle to grave and mainly provided on the outskirts/in industrial parks.
Poor infrastructure which is strangling growth for business development.

Full text:

You are not being broad enough in the types of businesses that you could attract to Rochford and to make assumptions that these types of businesses would like to be located on Industrial sites like Purdey’s is ridiculous. You are targetting businesses that essentially encourage low education levels which means that our most talented people to move out of the area to work in firms that are seeking these skills.

By the nature of industrial park business - these are relatively large units - there is no provision for entrepreneurs / small businesses to start growing and yet you recognise that there are many businesses that are started at home. There is no middle ground for these business to grow from home based to requiring a large unit.

Again by encouraging business to the Industrial centres where there is limited transport links to you are encouraging the use of the car because of the poor transport network within the area. Not everyone wants to travel to London and Southend to work (as per your figures there are more people that work in Other, Basildon, Castle Point and Chelmsford than work in London and Southend - yet “good rail links” are often quoted as providing the right infrastructure on housing developments. Most people in the area don’t use these rail links to get to work. Therefore you are NOT catering to the needs of most people in order for them to get to work.

The woefully inadequate investment in our local infrastructure is basically strangling businesses from flourishing. The amount of journey time from one place to another is limiting the range that a business can provide its services to.
