We are keen that any commercial or educational developments in the area should include a positive recognitiion of disability as a mainstream issue. Over 50% of disabled people are in work, and the employment, goods and services which they support, contribute to the economic well-being of the community. Over 60% of people over the age of 55 will have a disability, or be a carer of a disabled person, before they retire.

All housing developments should be designed 'for life' i.e The Rowntree Foundation recommendations. Thus as the householder ages, or their condition (physical, sensory or cognitive) changes, the house should be designed to simple and low cost adaptation to permit the resident to remain in the property for as long as possible.

P9. Environmental technologies, new products and services should be encouraged. There are skills shortages in these areas which, for disabled people trained for such skills, will offer a better opportunity for sustainable employment. The jobs market on a level playing field, as the option of bringing in short term contract labour from other areas would not be as cost effective as employing local, skilled and motivated disabled people.

P10. The new railway station is an opportunity to design for complete accessibility and inclusion. Access from one platform to the other via a tunnel, with lifts, would enhance accessibility for frail and disabled passengers. Pre-planned boarding points for interface between carriage and mobility scooters and wheelchairs, would obviate the need for pre-booked station assistance and encourage disabled passengers to travel to and from the airport by rail, at any time.
