London Southend Airport and Environs Joint Area Action Plan Preferred Options

The stated scope of the AAP in para 1.4 is to provide the framework for the regeneration and expansion of London Southend Airport and its environs. We assume from this that the proposed extension of the existing runway (shown shaded on the Proposals Map) is an integral part of the AAP. This being the case, we would expect the direct and indirect impacts of the runway extension to be fully assessed and considered within the plan.

The Church of St Laurence and All Saints, listed grade I, lies some metres from the south-west end of the existing runway. English Heritage is pleased that the recent proposal to demolish the church has been withdrawn. The extension of the runway will, nevertheless, affect its setting, both visually, and in terms of the level of noise generated by aircraft. It is therefore vital that the AAP addresses these matters. It is of fundamental importance that none of the proposals would prejudice the future use of the church.
