Policy T5 - Park and ride

The need for urgent improvements to the A127 has been accepted for many years. An increase in airport traffic will result in deadlock for much of the day.
Using a Park and Ride facility in Nestuda Way should be used for the benefit of Southend as well as the airport. With little adaptation to the road layout, buses could take car occupants down Westbourne Grove to Chalkwell, along the sea front to the Kursaal, up to the Town and the bus station then up Victoria Avenue and back to Nestuda Way.

We are in favour of the airport expansion and wish to see the residents of Southend and Rochford receive maximum benefit from the investment. Added employment is welcomed but we expect the Councils to ensure there is a good proportion of skilled employment in addition to the support of the service industries.

The consultation document seems only to consider issues relating to the airport without looking at other local issues that will be affected by the existence of the enlarged airport.

We are concerned about the number of night flights proposed. We appreciate that 350 per month are currently allowed but this number is not used and an increase to the current number would put intolerable disruption to those living under the flight path. We call for a restriction on night flights to the current level of use. The averaging of night flights throughout the year must not be allowed. It is not acceptable for an increase in flights during the summer season balancing a reduction during winter months.

The new football stadium will cause further congestion. The Park and Ride facility should also be used to take supporters to the Stadium on match days. A match day link with Southend stations will be needed in any case so linking this with the Park and Ride will make the most effective use of the facilities.
