Hockley Area Action Plan - Issues and Options

I would agree that the buildings and infrastructure of Hockley are grey and sometimes unattractive. However Hockley still has a village feel and has a long-standing community of people. Any changes to Hockley need to be sensitive to that, and offer ways to enhance the community aspects of Hockley rather than detracting from that.
Why not place some public leisure facilities within Eldon Way?

The shops in Hockley are not "of poor quality" they are independent traders that must all meet a demand, or they wouldn't survive.
Where one is considering the community, one of Hockley's problems is the gangs of youths that hang around, especially at night. Offering them high-quality youth facilities is essential. The bigger picture though, is that youth gangs are less of a problem where people know each other. These proposals are going to turn Hockley into a faceless town.

The building of a large supermarket in Hockley is unnecessary and unwanted.
It will encourage further traffic in the town and make the place look worse!
Assuming that public money will be put into redevelopment, can it at least focus on improving community facilities and providing them where they do not exist. A reinstated bus service (the number 7), a cycle route, subsidised chidren's groups and activities, and a youth hall and park for instance.
New homes must be affordable - there is a dearth of low-cost homes in the area - and designed to be green.

Scrap the supermarket idea - it's terrible. The building, the associated car use, and the redirecting money away from the local community will all be bad for the Hockley area.
Developing Eldon Way is a good idea if it can be done while disrupting the independent traders trying to make a living there.

Why not leave Hockley as it is and put the money into refurbishing existing buildings, supporting greening and community efforts?
