London Southend Airport & Environs Joint Area Action Plan Issues & Options Paper

Q5.1 Which is your preferred Scenario for the future of the Southend Airport area?

Representation ID: 2983

Received: 13/08/2008

Respondent: St. Michael's School

Representation Summary:

I have just become aware that a six week period of consultation is about to end regarding the various proposals and options being put foward for Southend Airport and would be grateful if this could be confirmed.

Clearly this has not been widely advertised as no one in school spoke to me about it prior to us breaking up for the summer recess. For such an important issue that will undoubtedly impact upon our school and its pupils the matter is of considerable concern.

Before considering any increase in the amount of air traffic, either through the allowance of whisper jets, or larger aircraft if the runway were to be extended, I would seek your assurance that the Council would directly consult with the various schools whose pupils and premises are clearly to be affected. I would further ask that the Council be completely transparent with the public by ensuring everyone is given the opportunity of knowing what is being considered. Perhaps the Council might consider a hosehold leaflet drop which would at least alert everyone to the proposals that are under consideration.

St. Michael's is already affected by the present level of traffic in and out of Southend Airport and the noise is undoubtedly a distraction during class times.

We are constantly being told about the importance of the sustainability of our planet and the carbon footprint we are leaving behind us. As a school educating children for the future, this is not the sort of legacy we want to leave them with.

I am not able to speak for all the other schools that are likely to be affected were these proposals to succeed but I would suggest that you please make sure every one of them is fully aware of the proposals and is given a reasonable amount of time, following the return from the summer holidays, to make a considered response.
