Representation Summary:

Paragraph 7.1-7.10

"Direct retail development to District's Town Centres of Rayleigh, Rochford and Hockley..prevent leakages into neighbouring town centres..restaurants, cafes"

Unlike Rochford and Rayleigh, Hockley is a village with basic needs:- grocery, greengrocers, meat, pharmacy, hardware, shoe mending, post office, haberdashery, newsagents etc. If one wants to buy eg a new winter coat, fashions, footwear, electrical goods, furniture etc, one goes to Southend, Basildon, Lakeside, even Rayleigh or London. The point is also made by arrival of a few luxury goods shops, which inevitably don't last - they serve better in a town.

The first three above items were originally provided by several local shops. Arrival of even the current supermarket has not only closed these shops, which were more than adequate for the purpose, but, due to lack of choice, has itself led to leaking out of shopping for basic needs to larger centres, much complained of by Rochford planning department. Current HAAP proposal to demolish more shops etc to provide a supermarket nearly 6 times the size of the current one will just aggravate the matter.

We have leisure, community services in Hockley, mostly in Eldon Way.

There are also some successful small restaurants.

Generally support these policies but particularly wish to see the retention of the village shops and public house, as we have already lost 1 (very popular) public house.
