London Southend Airport and Environs Joint Area Action Plan Preferred Options

Representation ID: 6803

Received: 06/04/2009

Respondent: Mrs Clair Johnston

Representation Summary:

No agricultural land should be given up to satisfy the needs of an airport expansion. No loss of Green Belt is acceptable as it makes a mockery of the reasons to have Green Belt in the first place. The damage caused to the environment and rural area would be irreversible. The loss of recreational areas, football and cricket pitches, private allotments and community activities is deplorable especially, we've lost so many of these facilities already. To expect people to lose their homes, is wholly unreasonable.

Representation Summary:

The effects of the massive increase in noise and pollution inevietably generated by the runway and airport expansion are going to be multiplied when the local green belt and surrounding farmland is decimated.

Closing the airport and building the business park on the site of the old runway would achieve a far better balance - The area is larger so we should be able to extrapolate from the JAAP proposals this would result in even more jobs, with very little environmental impact.

I am concerned about the considerable and unnecessary expansion of the industrial estate and the loss of greenbelt and good farmland. The area adjacent to Cherry Orchard Way was originally allocated as a business park but lay unused for years. The park and ride is a good idea especially if it goes by way of Southend Hospital.

The overhead noise caused by aircraft on approach for landing, take off and circling during the day will destroy the learning and teaching environment which West Leigh Junior School has successfully created over the past 50 years. The night time noise will have a detrimental effect on quality of sleep for our students, therefore affecting their learning potential. The pollution will adversely affect the quality of life for students, not only from the aircraft but from the resulting increase in traffic on the roads.

Everything comes at a price, I am not prepared to trade in the haven of escape from the noise and air pollution away from grid lock traffic and transport mayhem that comes with a busy day-to-day running of a commercial airport. I specifically moved away from London City Airport to escape the constant noise of aeroplanes taking off and landing. Let Southend/Rochford be, we would not be able to cope with the increase of traffic and transport problems, let alone the noise/air pollution.

Representation Summary:

The future of the airport land could be its closure, and use for public benefit generally, such as housing, public green space and for business use. This would negate the need to encroach on existing green field and agricultural land such as areas ii(d) ii(a) i ii(b) ii(c) xi etc. Surely a cheaper option and better for the planet.

Full text:

I oppose any expansion of Southend Airport for the following reasons:

Nationally

For the future of our planets environment and fuel resources - air travel as a growing source of carbon emission needs to be discouraged and curtailed.

Economically

Expanding tourist travel exports large amounts of money out of the country.

Locally

The increase in jet flights in a built up area is nonesensical due to increase in noise pollution, air pollution and more danger of plane accidents.

Increase in passenger numbers will make road travel in the area worse due to traffic congestion.

The concreting over of more greenfield land for commercial use will no doubt continue, without the spur of the airport scheme.

RE Suggested areas for change to expand the airport.
This is really NOT an option. Please can the JAAP not think of alternative ways to bring growth and prosperity to our local economy by using and improving upon existing road, rail and water networks? There are plenty of specialists out there willing to give advice (some even for free, I'm sure) on the advantages - economically, ecologically and environementally - of using these alternative means. Please don't be pressured into any central government demands to make such a poor choice for our local community.

Any extension to the airport will impact greatly on hundreds/thousands of people in the area. This is not the place for a main airport!
